Each spring, the CBC hosts a Canada Reads event where celebrities champion five Canadian books. The goal is to choose a title that everyone in the country should be reading.

Brantford will choose our own winner at the second-annual Canada Reads: BPL Edition event.

Comedian and award-winning television writer Graham Chittenden will emcee and evening of debate and discussion between a panel of local book lovers.

This year, our panel includes:

  • Chamber of Commerce CEO Charlene Nicholson
  • Local author and photographer Layne Beckner (Read her book Remember Us)
  • Library Board member Caroline Freibauer
  • Library Book Club Leader Anna Rowe
  • Book blogger Susan Gibson (Read her blog A Year of Books)

Refreshments will be served at the event.

This year's shortlisted titles are:

Homes: A Refugee Story by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah with Winnie Yeung

Brother by David Chariandy

By Chance Alone: A Remarkable True Story of Courage and Survival at Auschwitz by Max Eisen

Suzanne by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, translated by Rhonda Mullins
