  • Brantford Public Library Launches New Poet Laureate Collection

The Brantford Public Library has been honoured with the donation of Brantford Poet Laureate, John B. Lee’s impressive and eclectic collection of Canadian poetry books. This tremendous gift will form the new Poet Laureate Collection to be officially launched by Mr. Lee on April 17 at the Main Library.

When asked what prompted him to make such a tremendous contribution to the library, Mr. Lee responded, “I wanted to make a permanent contribution to the Library in order to provide something of a lifeline for anyone toiling away at the lonesome craft.”

“Mr. Lee’s gift provides a rich new dimension to the Library’s existing poetry collections and, since April is National Poetry Month, it’s a great time to launch this wonderful new collection and re-ignite people’s passion for this timeless art”, said Library CEO Rose Vespa.

As the recent recipient of four prestigious poetry awards: the 2009 Cranberry Tree Press Award; the Rubicon Midwinter Chapbook Award; the 2008 Canadian Poetry Association Poetry Competition; and England’s Petra Kenney Poetry Prize, Mr. Lee will use the occasion to launch his newest book: Island on the Wind-Breathed Edge of the Sea.

In Mr. Lee’s own words: “Poetry slows us down. Deepens our regard. Lets us linger long enough to engage the heart, mind, body and soul in one surround.” A visit to the Main Library to peruse this wonderful collection is a true treat to the senses.

Canadian Parents for French donate funding for French materials to Brantford Public Library

The Brantford Public Library has received a generous donation of $2,500 from the Brantford Chapter of Canadian Parents for French (CPF Brantford) to purchase French materials for the library's children's collection.

Nancy Wolf, Brantford Public Library's Acting CEO said the funding will be used to improve the recreational reading materials available in the children's French collection. "This donation will help to make a good collection even better", said Ms. Wolf. "We are deeply grateful to the Brantford Chapter of Canadian Parents for French for their generous support. These new materials will provide some great resources for French Immersion students in grades 1 through 6", added Wolf.

Canadian Parents for French (CPF) is a national network of volunteers dedicated to the promotion and creation of French Second Language (FSL) learning opportunities for young Canadians. Founded in 1977, the organization has grown to over 25,000 members today.

Locally, Canadian Parents for French Brantford has been partnering with the Brantford Public Library to offer Rendez-vous for Learning, a reading program for French Immersion students on Sunday afternoons at the Main Library. Matching a French Immersion primary student with a Brantford Collegiate Institute French Immersion student, the program offers students a great opportunity to use French language outside of the school setting. The program resumes at the beginning of February. For more information, contact CPF Brantford by email (cpf-brantford@sympatico.ca) or call 519-753-7405.

"CPF-Brantford appreciates the support of the Brantford Public Library for this valuable and fun reading program," said Kim Dawdy, Treasurer of CPF Brantford. "This grant, funded by Canadian Parents for French (Ontario), is designed to support a Story-Time en Français program introduced to help children improve their French skills outside of the classroom. The elementary students involved are excited to come to the library on Sundays and they will certainly benefit from the additional French materials now available," added Dawdy.
